10 Things Nobody Tells You About the Amalfi Coast

Everyone tells you the Amalfi Coast is beautiful. Nobody tells you it's vertical. Here are 10 things that will actually make your trip better.

1. THERE ARE NO FLAT WALKS. Every town is stairs. Positano alone has over 1,500 steps from the main road to the beach. Pack shoes you can walk in, not flip-flops.

2. THE BEST FOOD IS INLAND. The restaurants with the sea views charge double and serve average food. The best meals on the coast are 10 minutes uphill, in family homes converted into trattorias. Ask any local — they'll point you away from the waterfront.

3. JULY AND AUGUST ARE A MISTAKE. The coast was not designed for the volume of people that arrive in peak summer. The roads are gridlocked, the beaches are sardine cans, and restaurants triple their prices. Come in May, June, or September — same weather, a third of the people.

4. THE FERRY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRAVEL. The SS163 coast road is one lane in each direction, clinging to a cliff, with tour buses coming the other way. Take the ferry between towns (April–October). It's faster, cheaper, and the views are better.

5. MAIORI HAS THE BEST BEACH. Everyone goes to Positano's Spiaggia Grande because it's famous. But Maiori has the longest beach on the entire coast, it's free, and it's never packed. The locals know this.

6. YOU DON'T NEED A CAR. Seriously. Parking costs €4-8/hour where you can even find it, the roads are terrifying, and you'll spend more time looking for a spot than enjoying the coast. Bus, ferry, or private transfer.

7. RAVELLO IS NOT ON THE SEA. Many people don't realize Ravello sits 350 meters above the coast. It's a 25-minute drive up a winding mountain road. But the view from Villa Cimbrone's Terrace of Infinity is worth every hairpin turn.

8. COLATURA DI ALICI IS THE REAL LOCAL SPECIALTY. Not limoncello. Cetara's anchovy sauce — a 2,000-year-old tradition descended from Roman garum — is what the Amalfi Coast is truly known for among Italian food lovers. Try it on spaghetti.

9. THE PATH OF THE GODS IS FREE. One of the most famous hikes in Europe, and it costs nothing. Start in Bomerano (Agerola), walk to Nocelle, take the bus back. 3 hours, no ticket, no booking needed. Just show up.

10. BOOK EXPERIENCES DIRECTLY. The big travel platforms charge 20-40% commission that drives up your price. Book directly with local operators — you'll pay less, and more of your money goes to the person actually running the experience.
